These are our top 5 Christmas markets in Salzburg

In the run-up to Christmas, there’s one thing you can’t miss in Salzburg: Christmas markets. There are many of them in the city and the province of Salzburg. Our editorial team presents our 5 favourite Christmas markets that you absolutely must not miss.

Christmas markets (or Advent markets): you find them everywhere in Salzburg in the pre-season to Christmas. They sweeten the wait for Christmas, offer the perfect opportunity for nice evenings with friends and colleagues or even for romantic dates! Strolling through the market stalls, you can discover regional handicrafts, Christmas decorations or handmade textiles, or fortify yourself with delicacies such as chestnuts, roasted almonds and regional doughnuts. But the most important thing at the Christkindlmarkt: punch and mulled wine to warm you up!

There are numerous Advent markets in Salzburg, both in the city and in the countryside. The best known are the one on Domplatz and the one in front of Mirabellgarten. But we recommend: make sure you visit other Christmas markets as well, because there is a lot to discover!

Here are our top 5:

Hellbrunner Adventzauber – the classic one

Hellbrunn Palace in Salzburg is famous for its water features. But the Christmas market in the palace and park is also becoming increasingly popular. Christmas trees with large red baubles decorate the courtyard and conjure up a romantic atmosphere. The market stalls offer handicrafts, Christmas decorations, delicacies from the region and, of course, punch and mulled wine.

A special attraction for kids (or their parents) is the Children’s Christmas World: children can send mail to the “Christkind”, ride the Christmas train or take part in a fairy tale scavenger hunt.

Adventmarkt in St. Peter Stiftskulinarium – the modern one

The St. Peter Stiftskulinarium is in the heart of Salzburg! The Christmas market there is not a classic one, because it focuses on the essentials: Punch and mulled wine! 😉 An outdoor lounge in the arcades by the Stiftskulinarium provides a cosy, romantic atmosphere. The homemade punch does the rest to warm the hearts of the visitors.

St. Gilgen Christmas Market on Lake Wolfgang – the baroque one

The Christmas market in St. Gilgen has a very special flair, as it is located directly on the beautiful Wolfgangsee. The 11-metre-high candle on the shore of the lake points the way to the Christmas market, which is romantically illuminated with numerous other large candles. The decorations with angels and animals are reminiscent of baroque ceiling paintings. The market stalls offer everything that regional crafts and customs have to offer. Of course, delicacies and the punch and mulled wine are not to be missed.

Advent market in St. Jakob am Thurn – the regional one

South of the city of Salzburg lies Sankt Jakob am Thurn, a picturesque village on a pond, on the banks of which stand a castle and a Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. Every weekend in Advent, a Christmas market is held in front of this church, which stands out above all for its regional products: delicacies from the local farmers, game specialities from the local hunters, as well as handmade ceramics or textiles made from sheep’s wool from the surrounding region. The proceeds of the Christmas market go to social causes and the upkeep of the church.

Children will enjoy the alpacas, which will also be taken on walks.

Christmas Market Großarl – the Mountain Advent

Großarl is located in an idyllic valley in the Alps. The likelihood of enjoying the Christmas market in snow is certainly best here. The small mountain village offers a traditional and atmospheric Advent market. The focal point of the market is the carved village nativity scene in life-size. Customs are very important here: Brass band concerts, Advent caroling and Krampus runs are on the programme. For the children there is a Christkindl workshop, a children’s biscuit bakery and much more.
